SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF RACE DISCRIMINATION IN THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER

Racism is one of the global issues that has no end, so the issue of racism has brought a lot of sadness from then until now. Such social issues in society are captured by the media as works that can motivate people. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series is one of the works that depicts racism in everyday life. This research aims to find out what types of semiotic aspects and the types of social aspects of racism aspects, and explain how the types of aspects can be represented in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research with a semiotic analysis approach. The data in this study were obtained through the selection of scenes in the miniseries "The Falcon and The Winter Soldier" in which there are elements related to this study, namely racial prejudice, racial stereotypes, racial discrimination, and racial violence. Through a combination of selected scenes and written data, the author analyzes the signs applying Roland Barthes' semiotic theory (1985).
Based on the research results, 27 data were found and analyzed in this study, so two types of semiotics and four types of social aspects were found. Researchers found 15 denotations and 12 connotations in semiotic aspects, then there were 7 racial prejudices, 3 racial stereotypes, 10 racial discrimination, and 7 racial violence in social aspects. Thus, it was found that the denotation and racial discrimination data in the scene of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier were more than the others, due to the theme of this series which contains characters who are open and the theme of racial discrimination in each character of the black race.
In this study, the researchers found 27 data. The most data in the semiotic type aspect is denotation with 15 data, this is because there are many dialog scenes that create the true meaning that the characters in the series want to express. Then, the most data found in the type of social aspect is racial discrimination with 10 data, of course, this is based on the theme of the series, which focuses on black racial characters who get racial discrimination from the white race throughout The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series.
