Abstract

Language is a communication tool, however there is a language barrier between the two cultures. Therefore, the translation of the source language into the target language plays an important role in facilitating cultural differences. Translation is applied in many areas of life, such as education, tourism, entertainment and work. The main objective is to describe the types of cultural vocabulary that cannot be translated into English in the series. Because, this series applied approximately 80% of Central Javanese language as dialog with English subtitles in it. The object of this research is words that cannot be translated into English in the "Tilik" series. The objectives of this research are (1) to find local words that cannot be translated into English which are applied using the translation method and (2) to analyze the translation techniques in the "Tilik" series.

The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive approach using Nida and Taber's theory for translation. The researcher collected the data by watching the “Tilik” series , reading transcripts, collecting dialogues containing the topic of study, and categorizing into translation technique and translation method.

In the findings and discussion data, 2 types of translation methods were found with a total of 36 data, including: Exotic method, Loan cultural method and 3 types of translation techniques were found with a total of 20 data, including: Generalization, addition and borrowing.

Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that translation in “Tilik” series uses 2 translation method and 3 translation technique in translation. This research focuses on local word data that cannot be translated into English.
