Indonesia is a country that has a tropical climate, where the intensity of
sunlight is more than that of countries with subtropical climates. Excessive sun
exposure can also have detrimental effects on skin health. Natural ingredients that
can be used as active ingredients for sunscreen are male papaya flowers. This
study aims to prove that sunscreen cream preparations from ethanol extract of
male papaya flowers can have antioxidant properties that can protect the skin from
the dangers of ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Analysis of the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of sunscreen cream
preparations of ethanol extract of male papaya flowers, was carried out using the
UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The extract is formulated in the form of a
cream with a concentration of 5%, 7.5% and 10%. Testing the physical quality of
cream includes organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH test, spreadability test,
adhesion test, protective power test, viscosity test and stability test using the
cycling test method. The sunscreen activity test was determined using the
spectrophotometric method with dilution using 96% ethanol, while the Sun
Protecting Factor (SPF) value was calculated using the mansyur method.
The results of this study were on the SPF value of each formula,
respectively, namely 15.04; 18.75 and 22.12. It was concluded that the sunscreen
cream of male papaya flower ethanol extract had sunscreen potential, with the
category of moderate ultraviolet (UV) protection potential in the three formulas.
